The 2 Hungry Guys went on a hunt for the weird, wacky and delicious – check out their review of Spicy Joint’s delicious Spicy Braised Chicken Feet and tangy Black Fungus and Sour Sauce. Chatswood Interchange has been a long time favourite of 2 Hungry Guys for everything from cheap eats to delectable dining – we’ve eaten everything from GRAM’s super fluffy, high rise pancakes, authentic Sichuan dining at China Chilli, egg-citing creations from Toastie Smith, to the highly addictive fried chicken at Chicken V (because who doesn’t love Korean Fried Chicken).
But for this visit, we checked out Spicy Joint to taste some of the epic unique dishes on offer. Spicy Joint, a wildly popular Sichuan chain in China, serves up not only native spicy food, but unique, culinary treats from across China.
The menu is jam packed, and the portions are huge giving us both quality and quantity. Do yourself a favour and arrive hungry so you can experience the full breadth of flavours and delights. And whilst not all dishes are spicy, the ones that are, will give chilli lovers that ‘knock-your-socks-off’ kick you crave!
You can expect top notch authentic Chinese dishes like Pork Wonton in Red Chili Sauce, Sliced Pork Belly with Pickled Vegetables and Combination Hot Pot, which incorporated moreish slices of meat
with a savoury tongue numbing broth. While totally delicious, both of these dishes are more of your “standard” style Chinese fare – the dishes that really stood out and caught our eyes were the Spicy Braised Chicken Feet in a Soy Sauce and the crunchy and the tangy Black Fungus and Sour Sauce, the latter of which ended up being our favourite dish!
Now, before you crinkle your nose at chicken feet (we did say we were on the lookout for epic and unique dishes, didn’t we?), chicken feet are considered quite a delicacy in China, Vietnam and the Philippines and has an interesting gelatinous texture that is popular in Asia but not so much in western countries. While it can of course be quite an intimidating dish (it is a foot, after all), it is definitely worth a try, particularly when it is cooked in a sweet and spicy sauce that is just so tasty. As for the best way to eat them? Well, there’s no real method to the madness, you’ve just got to go for it! The rule of thumb is: everything can be eaten, aside from the bone and nails!
Whether you’re craving traditional Chinese food, or you’re after a new culinary experience, you won’t be disappointed at Spicy Joint. The venue really was right up our alley as lovers of spice (Sichuan pepper was a hero in a lot of the dishes) and had plenty of unique dishes that we’d never tried before as well!
Our advice? Arrive early as it’s often packed during peak times, and don’t be afraid to get the chicken feet if you’re feeling adventurous!
